The time for Changla – paddy transplantation, is an important one in the agricultural calendar. Traditionally, households help each other to complete the backbreaking work sooner, and the traditions surrounding the activity, including the songs sung, the manner of work, and the coming together of communities, represent the rich intangible cultural heritage of Bhutan.
These lush paddy fields surrounding the Tashichhodzong have been protected for this reason, with the result that from this side of the valley at least, the view remains similar to what it would have been decades ago.
These paddy fields now belong to the state, and work is done here by volunteers, including students and civil servants.
This beautiful photograph of Thimphu valley features in the July calendar on Yellow.
