This month’s calendar is a tribute to His Majesty the Third Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, who was born on May 2nd, 1928.
His Majesty is known as the Architect of Modern Bhutan- after years of isolation while the world went through wars and conflict, Bhutan finally began to open its doors to the outside world, and the foundations for modern Bhutan were laid down.
The reign of His Majesty the Third Druk Gyalpo saw the building of the first roads into and across Bhutan, and the first modern hospitals, which provided free healthcare services for the people. The number of schools were multiplied, and free education was made accessible to children than ever before. The government was structured into ministries to help support development, and with the National Assembly, a system of people’s representation was established, which would culminate in today’s democratic system.
Bhutan joined the United Nations and other international organizations, and began to engage in and contribute to global affairs.
