This month’s calendar is a tribute to His Majesty the Third Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, who was born on May 2nd, 1928.
His Majesty is known as the Architect of Modern Bhutan- after years of isolation while the world went through wars and conflict, Bhutan finally began to open its doors to the outside world, and the foundations for modern Bhutan were laid down.

He was a simple man born to Kazi Shaba Punchung and Tsherim a farmer’s daughter from Tsento in upper Paro in 1855.

Jaga Tarshi, widely known as Jaga Darshi (Flagpole) because of his height (7 Feet 2 inches) is known for being the fastest and most famous messenger in Bhutan. He was capable of covering a distance of over 200 km in a single day with just a pair of ‘tebtem’ or cowhide sandals in those days.
